Drive Train
The simplest way to explain what a drive train is is that it’s the system of gears and shafts that transfer power from an engine to the wheels of a vehicle. The transmission contains different sets of gears that are used in different conditions. For example, a two-speed gearbox will have one set for everyday driving and one for climbing steep hills, whereas a four-speed box has three sets: one for city driving, one for country roads, and one with low gearing suitable only for cruising on open highways at high speeds.
A typical manual shift car has five or six forward gears (depending on whether it’s left-hand or right-hand drive) plus reverse. And so does an automatic transmission car – but don’t think that you can always drive it as if it were a manual car. The automatic transmission has to be programmed first, and the gears selected depend on your engine’s power output, the vehicle’s weight, tyre size, and other variables.
The drive train is the system in your car that transfers power to the wheels. It consists of a differential, transmission and axle. The most common type is a “transaxle,” which is an automatic transmission attached to both axles so you can shift while driving.
Why do you need to get your car's drivetrain repaired?
If your car is constantly humming or whining and you hear grinding, it’s because the drive train needs repairs. A neglected transmission may leak oil from seals, which can cause a slippery mess on your garage floor. Even more severe leaks could lead to an expensive repair bill if not detected early enough. When there is a problem with the differential, it can cause your car to pull one way or another when you’re driving straight. Finally, a broken axle will send sounds through the drive train that are typically difficult to diagnose and may lead to more severe damage if left untreated.
How do I get my car's DriveTrain repaired?
Bring your vehicle to a mechanic for diagnosing. If there is no problem, then you may be able to get your car’s drivetrain repaired by changing the oil and filter. It will usually cost $60-$120 per change. This does not always fix the issue because it might just need new parts or more extensive repairs. When you take your vehicle to a mechanic, they will inspect the drive train and recommend what needs to be done. (This may include an estimate of how much it will cost.) If you decide not to get repair work done at this time, make sure that you need to put in new oil and filter if there is no problem with the differential or axle.
If the problem is not fixed by changing the oil, you may need to replace your differential or axle bearings for $400-$1200 per bearing, depending on make/model. However, if there is no other damage found during the inspection, this should fix it permanently.
